AnyClient is a web based service designed to provide users with a file transfer client that requires no installation, is multi-platform and can connect to servers using various protocols including FTP, FTPS, SFTP and WebDAV. AnyClient may also be downloaded and run locally. With AnyClient, you can transfer files from a friend's computer straight into your FTP account without installing any software on their PC, or you can keep a set of tools and files on your FTP account that you can log into and download from any machine. Here are some notes on this program:
- The site manager: allows you to set up profiles that you can access later at the press of a button. Note that you can create multiple profile for the same account; for example a profile that connects to account A and opens at directory B, and another one that connects to the same account but opens at directory C. Note that these profiles are saved locally whether you use the local or online versions.
- Local machine installation: You will need to make sure that your computer has a Java Runtime Environment installed, version 1.5 or higher. The latest version of the JRE is available for download from Sun Microsystems' website. then Download the AnyClient software by visiting http://www.anyclient.com/ and clicking on the "Download" tab. Choose the appropriate installer for your computer's operating system. Run the installer program.
- Putting AnyClient on your site: The AnyClient service uses the Secure FTP Applet product offered by JSCAPE. To use Secure FTP Applet on your own site you may purchase a license.
- Security: from the website's FAQ: "AnyClient supports several secure protocols which encrypt your data during transit including FTPS (FTP over SSL), SFTP/SSH and secure WebDAV via HTTPS", and "all site profile information is saved locally on your computer and cannot be seen by users other than yourself ". However, If your files are very important, to use local FTP clients will be more secure.
